If you've purchased a PC from Dell lately you might have noticed that there is an option to get the recovery media, specifically Windows 8.1, on an 8GB USB flash drive. If you work in an IT department, these flash drives might start piling up and you might want to try and use them, at least some of them, for something else. Here's the rub. The freaking things are read only.UPDATE 2016/10/07: If you have Dell Windows 10 USB sticks, please see.UPDATE: Some of the commentator's below are complaining about error code: -2. I did some more testing and after a few successful and a few unsuccessful attempts, I'm thinking that the firmware might have changed. Of the drives that I have, it seems the ones with the multi-colored labels on the back work fine after using the low-level format utility (one 8GB writable partition). The utility failed with error code: -2 and bricked the drives on all the ones I've tested that have solid blue labels, light blue or dark blue. Don't use this utility if your drive has a solid blue label on the back.UPDATE 2: posted a solution for the blue label Dell drives in the comments below. The new guide can be found at.I don't know about Dell's consumer level PC's but stuff like the Latitude laptops can be had with an optional 8GB bootable USB 3.0 flash drive with Windows 8.1 on it. Unfortunately, these flash drives are write protected. They can't be written to, formatted, or partitioned, but if you're willing to loose all the data currently on the drive, they can be made to work. Low level formatting the drive will wipe all the data and disable the write protection.A Dell USB flash drive without it's skinA close up of the USB controller chip - Phison PS2251-07. I offer the thoughts above as general inspiration but clearly there are questions like the one you bring up where the most important thing will be working in honest good faith. I don?t know if best practices have emerged around things like that, but I am sure that your job is clearly identified as a fair game. Both boys and girls feel the impact of just a moment?s pleasure, for the rest of their lives. Does anyone know the latest versions of the three tools mentioned in the 4 posts about this subject?UPTool. I contacted dell and they said it was the same as the tutorials they show with the desktop, but my screens when hitting the f2 and f12 keys are completely differnt from the ones show.Mu system currently has secure boot disabled though. Though there was one other thing that you were supposed to do and I forget. Also it shows you how to boot from a flash drive, but not a recovery media disk. I need to know how to do it from a recovery media disk please.I have looked everywhere for the answer. Dell has it, but they want me to give them 100 dollars. Would you give someone 100 dollars if they were wrong from the start? They gave me to someone else and he 'corrected' what the woman had to say. He said it was'usually' the same. However that wasn't what the woman has said. If they are just going to change their information just like that would you trust them? So asking is my last resort. May update with video link so people can see what I have to work with. If I can edit the topic it doesn't show me how to, but I went to f12 and went with boot options. I went with uie of whatever boot safe mode off. It restarted, and when it did it gave me an option to click on any key to boot from cd. Took a long time, butthe cd finally started the boot. However, when doing custom install the cd said there was a missing partion or something like that. Dell Windows 8 Tablet RecoveryIt said that for the upgrade option too. Did I do something wrong or did I get a bad disk?I don't know how I could have gotten a bad disk because the disk was used before when we installed a new hard drive to it. I don't know what happened, but after the person we fixed it for started using the computer it won't load to the sign in. It just sitsthere with the windows logo and the loading circle bubble thing. I don't know how to describe that thing. I got Dell Inspiron 15Z with Windows 8 last week.It has no DVD for Windows Re-installation.Suppose at any time, my OS crashes & I need to re-install,would it be a better option to do that via Windows Recovery(the one in control panel) or using the Dell Backup & Recovery?ie,Which one would be a cleaner install? Also,I dont have my product key(& I dont want to use any external softwares to read it out for me from BIOS)Lastly, in control Panel, there's this windows 7 file recovery too, is that for OS-reinstallation too? Well.Dell Backup & Recovery will make an image of the Recovery Partition (It's hidden on your HHD)It will back your laptop to the condition you bought it with (Removing the partitions you created and the Apps)So you should make a backup of your files on External Hard Disc. Windows Recovery(the one in control panel). It will do the same. But None of them is a Clean install. To do a Clean install you have to obtain a Windows 8 installation Media DVD Or animage to burn it to DVD or USB stick. To get your Product key. You have to use a Third party Software (small tools).Windows 7 File Recovery is to backup your files.Hope it helps. However, in Dell Backup & Recovery, I can see an option to 'reinstall disks', which is different from 'backup your data' option. Moreover, this reinstall disk option requires a USB or DVDs so its fair to assume it's talking about only OS & not entire data on Laptop(my mistake that I didnt mention this in my question). But my question seems almost answered by you, ie Dell is better because other options dont provide only-OS backup.I was under the impression that Windows Recovery can also do only-OS backup. Thanks for clearing it up.–Feb 3 '14 at 16:59. In Windows 8 they dropped the use of the F8 key to access the boot menu. Now to access such menu you can hold Shift before you press Restart (so already within Windows) and you'll be presented with it after the reboot. Another way is to press 'Restart now' at the general PC settings:As usual, Windows automatically shows the menu when it detects an error and can't continue booting anyway.Boot menu:Troubleshoot:Advanced options:You can find more information about it in a or at MSDN.To proceed with a recovery process once there go to the troubleshoot menu and select to either refresh or reset the machine. You can find some more information about the process in other question's answer.
